Is it safe to take lamotrigine and breast-feed?

Fråga: Is it safe to take lamotrigine and breast-feed?

Sammanfattning: Based on this data, ie the extremely small amount of drug that is excreted into the breast milk and the lack of side effects, it would appear that this drug would be safe to take and breast-feed.

Svar: Lamotrigine is a phenyltriazine used as an adjunct in the treatment of partial seizures and secondarily generalised tonic-clonic seizures, not satisfactorily controlled with other therapies (1). A literature search found no information on the excretion of the drug in breast milk. The manufacturer Wellcome, revealed that they have data on a small number of infants exposed to this drug via breast-milk. Preliminary data indicates that lamotrigine is excreted into the breast-milk in concentrations 40-45 per cent of the plasma concentration. The ingested dose was calculated to be 0.06-0.75 mg/kg/in 24 hours. The average dose of the mother is 200-400 mg/day. No adverse effects were reported in the infants (2).
