Is the anabolic steroid clostebol acetate in Tropical cream absorbed by the skin? Can it be abused

Fråga: Is the anabolic steroid clostebol acetate in Tropical cream absorbed by the skin? Can it be abused as a doping agent?

Sammanfattning: In hypogonadal men, testosterone applied to the skin is effective in elevating testosterone levels. The anabolic and androgenic effect after topical application of clostebol acetate in humans has not been studied. However, an androgenic/anabolic effect of clostebol acetate in tropical cream is likely to occur.

Svar: Clostebol acetate has anabolic properties and is classified among other androgens and anabolics (1). It is administered orally, by intramuscular injections and topically for the healing of wounds and ulcers (1). Clostebol acetate injections have been frequently used, although illegally, as an exogenous hormone in cattle fattening (2).

Clostebol acetate is, due to its chemical similarity with testosterone, expected to be absorbed across the skin. Its clinical use in wounds and ulcers supports this hypothesis. Application of transdermal testosterone has been found to normalise serum testosterone concentrations in hypogonadal men (3).
