Svar: According to the manufacturer a capsule of "Ripped Fuel" contains 125 mg phenylalanine, 50 mg L-carnitine, 100 ug chromium and 455 mg of guarana extract with a content of 100 mg caffeine. Phenylalanine and carnitine are amino acids, with no known teratogenic properties, at least not in moderated doses, as above (1, 2). One-hundred mg of caffeine is found in a strong cup of coffee and is not harmful to the fetus. A large intake of caffeine during pregnancy, more than 6-8 cups of coffee daily, have been associated with an increased risk of abortion and low birth weight, with smoking and alcohol intake as possible confounders (1). One-hundred ug of chromium is within the recommended daily intake of 50-200 ug, pregnant or not (3).
Also, intake of a possibly harmful substance in very early pregnancy, is usually said to lead to a all-or-none response, with either an early spontaneous abortion or a normal pregnancy.
