Is mupirocin contraindicated in pregnancy?/nLocal nasal treatment with Bactroban Nasal (mupirocin)

Fråga: Is mupirocin contraindicated in pregnancy?

Local nasal treatment with Bactroban Nasal (mupirocin) is considered in a pregnant woman (week 32), colonised with staphylococci.

Sammanfattning: Human teratogenicity data on mupirocin is almost non-existent. The absorption of topically administered mupirocin is low and animal studies show no teratogenicity. This, and the fact that the patient is pregnant in the third trimester would indicate a very low risk of teratogenic or fetotoxic effects. Since the staphylococcal infection itself poses a risk for the child, the pregnancy should not be considered a contraindication to treatment in the present case.

Svar: No information on the issue was found in Medline, Drugline or standard pharmacological literature. The manufacturer is aware of only one case of exposure during pregnancy (1). In this case, no abnormalities were noticed. In animal studies, high doses of mupirocin had no teratogenic effects (1, 2). Notably, the absorption of locally administered mupirocin is very low, 0.3-0.9 percent of the administered dose (3).
1 Personal communication Annika Johansson, GlaxoSmithKline
2 Drugdex: Mupirocin Mupirocin.
