Fråga: Is tinidazole teratogenic?
A pregnant woman has taken a single dose of tinidazole 4-5 weeks after her last menstrual period.
Sammanfattning: Although information is still scarce, there are no indications of tinidazole being teratogenic.
Svar: A similar question has previously been answered by the drug information centre in Odense, and the answer has been documented in Drugline (1). At the time, only ten exposures during pregnancy had been reported, none of which resulted in congenital malformations.
An updated Medline search identified an additional case-control study from Hungary (2). In 22843 children with congenital malformation, 10 (0.04 percent) had been exposed to tinidazole during pregnancy. In 38 151 controls without congenital abnormalitites, 16 (0.04 percent) were exposed, resulting in an odds ratio of 1.0 (95 percent confidence interval 0.7; 1.3). The exposure data was collected both prospectively and retrospectively, the latter method introducing a risk of recall bias.
In the Swedish Medical Birth Register, there are 19 reports of children exposed to tinidazole in utero. None of these had any congenital malformations (3).
