Fråga: Is there any documentation for the use of oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) to treat aggressive behaviour in borderline personality disorder?

The question relates to a young female patient suffering from aggressive behaviour and borderline personality disorder. Oxcarbazepine has been suggested as a supportive treatment to diminish the aggressive behaviour.

Sammanfattning: Data concerning the use of oxcarbazepine in borderline personality disorder are sparse. There is no documentation showing the efficacy of oxcarbazepine in the treatment of aggressive behaviour in borderline personality disorder. Well designed randomized controlled trials (RCT:s) are lacking.

Svar: In an extensive search in literature and databases only one study was found (1). The study is a pilot study and in the study no controls were used, it was non-blinded and non-randomised. Patients with borderline personality disorder were included and very narrow inclusion criteria were used, as no psychiatric co-morbidity was allowed. Patients treated with psychotropic drugs and/or psychotherapy in the three months preceding the study were excluded. Of 17 included patients 75% completed the study (12 weeks) and moderate effects were seen on a rating scale for measuring outbursts of anger. Adverse effects were not studied as a primary objective and are not accounted for in detail in the paper. Bellino S, Paradiso E, Bogetto F.
