Fråga: Is it possible to use oral amphotericin B in a pregnant woman (6th month) without risk for the foetus?

Sammanfattning: On a strict clinical indication, amphotericin B could be used in pregnant women as judged from the available literature information.

Svar: The possible teratogenic effect of amphotericin B has not been prospectively evaluated. However, there is not a single case reported of malformation supposedly related to amphotericin B. Thus, available sources conclude that the use of amphotericin B would not be dangerous in pregnancy (1-6).

The pharmacokinetic properties and the nephrotoxic potential of amphotericin B have been reviewed in another drugline-document (7). In the actual case oral administration of the drug was considered. The drug is poorly absorbed (8).
