Fråga: What number of reports on renal adverse effects possibly caused by quinolones, are known to the Swedish as well as the WHO adverse drug reaction monitoring centres?

Sammanfattning: Considering the wide spread use of the quinolones, the numbers of renal adverse effects do not seem to be high. However, these data support the view that the quinolones can interfere with renal function and notably cause acute renal failure and nephritis.

Svar: In the Swedish Side Effect Register there are 4 cases involving renal adverse effecs out of 72 side effects reported for ciprofloxacin. They were classified respectively as renal insufficiency, nephritis, polyuria and increase in serum creatinine. Out of 3412 reactions reported to the WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring there were 313 cases related to the kidneys. Among these were anuria (1), BUN increased/creatinine clearance decreased (48) and nephritis (24).

Concerning norfloxacin there are two cases of polyuria out of a total number of side effect reports amounting to 233 cases. The WHO centre has 2000 reports on norfloxacin and 89 of those consider the urinary system. In 21 of the cases, the diagnoses could indicate acute renal failure. In addition there are 2 cases of oliguria and 2 cases of nephritis.
